Elena Kousiou, the party’s deputy press secretary, wants to put an end to the debate over unity within the Democratic Alarm, stating that “unity isn’t measured by the number of candidates—whether you have three, two, or ten. Unity is always measured by the behavior of all of us.”
As she added while speaking on state radio, unity is always measured by everyone’s behavior—that is, whether there is respect for procedures.
She added that “this is not something that should be a cause for concern just because Ms. Dimitriou has withdrawn.”
When asked to comment on reports regarding the sounding out of other DISY officials regarding internal party procedures—such as the name of Loukas Fourlas—Ms. Kousiou stated that “I’ve read them; to be honest, I haven’t been able to speak with them, but I believe that when the time comes—and whenever necessary—they will speak out on this themselves.”
Commenting on Ms. Dimitriou’s decision to withdraw from the race for the DISY nomination, Ms. Kousiou stated that the DISY President sensed the public’s concern, and this was something that troubled her. She added, “Good for her—I think it was a truly leadership-worthy move on her part to let them move forward while she herself continues as the guardian of the Democratic Alarm.”
At the same time, he denied claims that the party’s president had faced pressure or “backed down” due to other circumstances.
“What could influence her, and what could put pressure on her? I mean, strictly speaking, a few months ago some polls were released. I think we’ve all seen them. I don’t think these polls reflect or justify any resignation for any other reason. “In other words, at least for us, it’s clear that this was a move driven by institutional responsibility.”
She added that, based on the data, there is nothing to justify the scenarios being reported about pressure being exerted.
