No substantive steps have been taken so far following António Guterres’s visit here, but all eyes are now on the leaders’ next two meetings.
The main goal is to lay the groundwork for progress on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with a possible agreement on the draft resolution, which is expected to be finalized by Professor McGarry before September 20.

Unresolved Issues
Christodoulides and Erhurman have much to discuss at their scheduled meeting this coming Wednesday.
Before the discussion begins on the outstanding issues that continue to block efforts to resume substantive talks on the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic is expected to personally express his condolences to the Turkish Cypriot leader regarding the deadly shipwreck off the coast of occupied Kyrenia.
Subsequently, the focus will shift to the outstanding issues that remain unresolved and hinder progress in the process, including the methodology, key aspects of the Cyprus issue, as well as a potential agreement on roadblocks, which would help foster a positive atmosphere.

What the United Nations is expecting is proper preparation ahead of the proceedings that will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with the Turkish Cypriot press reporting again today that the Turkish Cypriot side is fully prepared.
“According to our sources, Olgin is expected to attempt to hold separate meetings with the two leaders in New York. President Erhurman is ready for this.”
