Former Cypriot Ambassador Kyriakos Kenevezos has identified a political vacuum in the centrist camp and makes no secret of his interest in entering the “race” in the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, he explained that his interest does not stem from “narcissism or arrogance,” but from the need highlighted by the recent parliamentary elections that “procrastination and shirking responsibility are the worst things anyone can do.” He also warned that “if responsibility is delegated once again, it will be a catalyst for the centrist camp and its views.”
Mr. Kenevezos did not fail to level sharp criticism at President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides for a lack of decisiveness and an alarming style of governance, particularly regarding the handling of critical issues such as the political conflict between Finance Minister Makis Keravnos and DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos. As he said, a number of issues are being left to run their course, rather than resolving them himself, and called on him to take action upon his return from New York to put an end to the public confrontation between the two officials.
When asked to comment on the “double talk” prevailing within the government regarding the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection project via the GSI pipeline, Mr. Kenevezos noted that the project has economic, political, and geostrategic dimensions, which should not be viewed in isolation from one another.
Energy Minister Michalis Damianos did not escape Mr. Kenevezos’s harsh criticism, who reportedly stated in an interview with a television station that the Republic of Cyprus is ready to contribute 25 million euros to the project, if the Greek government issues a NAVTEX to conduct seabed surveys. He questioned whether Nicosia lacks trust in Athens and emphasized that “there is no national leeway for dilemmas regarding the burden of proof.”
Mr. Kenevezos also claimed that Mr. Damianos said that “when there is no chance of success, you cannot move forward or put forward your policies,” characterizing this position as politically criminal and emphasizing that “proposals are put forward to dignified and proud people and are either adopted or rejected based on the certainty of success.”
