The “Minister of Public Works and Transportation,” Erhan Arikli, following reports that the Republic of Cyprus is preparing a new arrest warrant for the 1996 murder of Tassos Isaac in Deryneia.
According to reports in the Turkish Cypriot online press, E. Arikli—one of five individuals wanted on international arrest warrants, who was arrested at the airport in Kyrgyzstan in 2012 on the basis of an international warrant, but was released following Turkish intervention—claimed in a related social media post that the Greek Cypriot side is “revisiting” the issue and preparing new warrants “for certain individuals, including myself.”
In his post, Arikli responded with language unprecedented for a political figure, using a derogatory Turkish proverb that describes a person who, believing they have nothing left to lose, behaves provocatively or without restraint.
He called the Turkish Cypriots who support the Cypriot initiative “bastards,” citing a short story from the Ottoman period by the writer Ömer Seyfettin, which refers to “traitors.”
