After a long absence from Limassol, Monsieur Doumani returns to the city for a concert at the PSI Foundation, full of energy and musical experimentation, with deep roots in Cypriot tradition and a strong contemporary character.
In a dynamic live performance, the tzouras, trombone, and acoustic guitar meet electronic music, sound effects, and looping techniques, creating an ever-evolving sound that moves between folk, jazz, rock, psychedelia, and avant-garde. Known for its high-energy performances and playful stage presence, the award-winning trio transforms familiar Cypriot sounds into something unexpected, mesmerizing, and unmistakably their own.
Described by The Guardian as “one of the most entertaining, self-assured, and inventive bands on the music scene,” Monsieur Doumani have been redefining Mediterranean music since their founding in 2012 in Nicosia. By combining diverse musical influences with their deep roots in Cypriot tradition, they create music that captures the pulse of contemporary society while preserving the timeless spirit of folk music.
The concert is presented as part of the parallel program for the Bill Viola exhibition. Unspoken, highlighting a different approach to the relationship between memory, cultural identity, and contemporary artistic expression. Through their experimental approach to traditional Cypriot music, Monsieur Doumani explore how traditions evolve, preserving elements of the past while responding to the realities of the present. Their music draws on collective cultural memory, a dimension that also resonates in the work of Bill Viola, who explores shared human experiences, ritual, and the timeless significance of images and gestures passed down from generation to generation.
