Internationally renowned stop-motion animator and director Barry Purves presents the masterclass “Passion, Process, Performance,” a unique opportunity for creators, students, professionals, and fans of animation and theater to get an up-close look at the creative process behind an animated film.
Using his award-winning film *Achilles* (1995) as a starting point, Barry Purves will “deconstruct” the film step by step, examining every technical choice, every design decision, and every narrative choice that led to its final form.
Through storyboards, photographs, and extensive behind-the-scenes material from *Achilles* as well as his other films, he will demonstrate how an idea is transformed into an image, motion, and narrative, as well as how creativity can flourish even within the constraints of time and budget.
The masterclass, however, is not limited to the world of animation. Barry Purves will also speak in detail about his work as a director and set designer in theater productions and operas, exploring the common principles that underpin creation for both the stage and the screen.
How do design, movement, lighting, space, rhythm, and every individual element contribute to the shaping of a story? How can a directorial choice simultaneously serve the narrative, the visual image, and the performance?
Purves will share his methodology and experience, demonstrating how every element of an artistic composition can—and must—contribute to the narrative.
“Passion, Process, Performance” is a rare opportunity to observe the creative process of a prominent contemporary animator and to discuss with him the relationship between concept, technique, form, and narrative.
