Five decades after the release of their debut album, the Ramones’ songs are making a comeback through a supergroup and an anniversary concert in Los Angeles
It was April 23, 1976, when a little record appeared on the shelves of record stores, featuring four “strange” guys wearing leather and… struggling to smile. It was the day the Ramones were “born.”
Their first, self-titled album would change the punk scene once and for all and spark a movement that, in the years to come, would influence everything from music to fashion. New York’s CBGB would become their home, the album would be hailed by critics, and the Ramones would lay the groundwork to become one of the most important bands of all time.
Five decades have passed since then, and the music world is preparing to celebrate this release with an anniversary concert, to be held on August 30 at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

And a concert like this simply has to feature some of the biggest stars of the punk scene on stage. That’s why members of Green Day, Blink-182, Rancid, and the Ramones have joined forces.
The band will be called Cretin Family and will consist of Tim Armstrong of Rancid, Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Travis Barker of Blink-182, and CJ Ramone, along with various surprise guests.
“This will be the biggest Ramones celebration anyone has seen in a long time,” said CJ Ramone about the concert.
“The spirit of the Ramones lives on at every punk concert, punk club, and festival. Generation after generation of ‘cretins’ and oddballs are becoming Ramones fans. Kids are influenced by the Ramones and don’t even know it yet. Viva Ramones!” emphasized Billy Joe Armstrong.

“Ever since I first heard the Ramones, music has never been the same. They’re my all-time favorite band! I can’t wait to play these wonderful, perfect Ramones songs with my friends CJ, Travis, and Billy. It’s going to be crazy!” said Tim Armstrong.
“The Ramones are the starting point for everything. Punk rock wouldn’t be what it is today without them. It’s a great honor to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the most important bands of all time,” noted Travis Barker.
John Travolta will host the evening.
