This Week's Cultural Calendar

September is packed with cultural events! Events, festivals, theater performances, and concerts. Let’s take a look at the cultural highlights from this Sunday through next Saturday, September 19.

The Harmful Effects of Smoking, Revisited

The play “The Harmful Effects of Smoking,” Lena Kitsopoulou’s new play for the Dendro Theater, directed by Kostas Silvestros, returns in September.

This time, the play will be presented on the stage of the Dendro Theater, for a limited number of performances, giving another chance to those who didn’t get to see it as well as to those who wish to experience it again.

“Hypergalactic Losers” Returns

The play, written by Konstantinos Tsitsios and directed by Aris Kyprianou, returns for three performances at the Flea Theater on September 13, 19, and 20. A tragicomic story centered on true male friendship and the trampled values of the region.

7th Queer Wave

Cyprus LGBTQ+ Film Festival. For seven years, Queer Wave has been bringing people together through stories that have made us laugh, question, mourn, fall in love, and imagine different futures —a practice that is perhaps more essential now than ever, as the futures we’ve dreamed of need to be protected, nurtured, and shared. Every year, the festival honors queer cinema and the filmmakers, artists, and communities that continue to shape, manipulate, and breathe life into it.

L’Evenement

On September 15, the Nicosia International Festival welcomes to Cyprus for the first time a production by the legendary Comédie Française, featuring the powerful autobiographical work by Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux, directed by the renowned actress and director Françoise Gillard.

Few literary works have managed to transform a deeply personal experience into a political and social event with the power that Annie Ernaux achieved with *The Event*. The book that shook France and inspired Audrey Diwan’s Golden Lion-winning film adaptation comes to the stage through a simple yet powerful theatrical adaptation by Françoise Gillard, a leading actress and member of the Comédie Française.

“The Breath of the Night”

A tribute to the love songs of Savvas Savvas. The concert “The Breath of the Night” on the main stage of the Satirical Theater, on September 16, is a tribute to love songs through the work of composer and pianist Savvas Savvas, marking his long artistic career.

“The Woman of Zakynthos”

Dionysios Solomos’s masterpiece comes to life as a dynamic, staged reading at the “To Erma” Café-Reading Room, for three performances.

Thursday, September 17, 8:00 p.m., and Friday, September 18, 8:00 p.m. & 11:00 p.m.

Vakia on the Walls

The internationally renowned Cypriot artist Vakia Stavrou, based in Paris, will give a concert unlike any other at the historic Field Club. She will be accompanied on the piano by Manolis Neophytou, a lyrical pianist and her longtime collaborator.

Book Presentation

“The Boy Who Wanted to Walk All the Way Around an Island,” by Vangelis Iliopoulos, Andreas Kostas, and Efi Kokkinaki, published by PATAKIS PUBLISHING, on Friday, September 18, at 7:45 p.m. at the Aradippou Lyceum Municipal Theater (indoor venue).

The event will be introduced by author and educator Anastasia Xenophontos Gaitanou. The musical group ANTAMA TRIO will provide the musical accompaniment.

Moov City Festival

This coming weekend, the Moov City Festival will transform the park of the old GSP into a hub for music and art, featuring Stavroz, Skiadareses, Pan Pan, Alexis Sunder, Della, and Nwaina on the lineup, while art installations round out the scene.
