The famous author announced that she is forced to stop publishing her books in the United Kingdom
She has been called the “voice of her generation,” and to date has sold more than 6 million books worldwide—with *Normal People* considered her greatest success. However, Sally Rooney is being forced to withdraw her works from the UK market because of her views.
The 25-year-old Irish author has spoken out in support of Palestine and against the genocide in Gaza, and has supported Palestine Action—which authorities designated as a terrorist organization last year under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2000. In fact, at that time she had stated that she would donate a portion of the proceeds from her books to the organization, causing an uproar in England, with the prime minister’s spokesperson hinting that the necessary measures would be taken if that were to happen.
“If the British government considers this ‘terrorism,’ then perhaps it should investigate the shadowy organizations that continue to promote my work and fund my activities, such as WH Smith and the BBC,” she replied at the time with a touch of irony.
About a year later, Sally Rooney was forced to withdraw her books from the UK market because of her support for Palestine Action. At the same time, she admitted that she decided to cancel a trip to England because there was a risk she would be arrested.

“In July 2025, the protest group Palestine Action was designated a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom. The following month, I wrote an article expressing my intention to continue supporting it, as it is not banned in the Republic of Ireland,” Rooney said in a statement.
“As a result, fulfilling the contracts for the publication of my work in the United Kingdom could now constitute a serious criminal offense. After several discussions, and with my full consent, the publisher Faber has decided that it can no longer distribute my work within the United Kingdom. “I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs and intentions, and I am fully prepared to accept the consequences,” she clarified.

For its part, the publishing house Faber emphasized in its own statement:
“Current legislation in the United Kingdom has led to a situation where Faber cannot transfer the proceeds from the sales of her books in Britain to Sally Rooney. Selling an author’s work and being unable to pay them the proceeds is an unacceptable situation for a publisher. Therefore, and in full agreement with Sally, we have decided to no longer distribute her works in the United Kingdom in any form.”
