The movies, plays, and TV series that defined the director
It’s hard to choose just five movies, TV series, or plays that left a lasting impression on me—among so many that I’d say shaped me—so I’ll approach this a bit differentlyand my choices will focus on the present moment.
THEATER: 1. Ibsen’s “J. G. Borgman,” directed by Ingmar Bergman, Residenzteater Munich, 1985
While I was still a student, this revelation fortunately came to me. It demonstrated that theater is not an emotional outpouring of loud voices and a display of skills, but something denser and, ultimately, more austere—when it dares to be straightforward.
2. “Le costume,” directed by Peter Brook, Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Paris, 2000
To reinforce all of the above, adding a sense of openness in communication, simplicity, and tenderness
CINEMA 3. “8 ½” Federico Fellini, 1963
4. “All That Jazz” by Bob Fosse, 1979
Two “related” films on the magic of “disenchantment”
TELEVISION 5. “Decalogue” by Krzysztof Kieślowski
Or what television might be like in an ideal world.
