The issue that arose regarding the proposal to centralize budgetary authority, put forward by George Papageorgiou, Director General of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, has been resolved, as stated by Deputy Minister Klea Hatzistefanou Papaellina.
Ms. Papaellina was responding to a question from a reporter for the “Parathiro” column of the newspaper “Politis,” asking whether the issue regarding the staff’s work stoppage had been resolved or if she would ultimately proceed with the letter concerning the Supervising Officers, during a press conference on the “2026 Support Plan for Cultural Activities of Religious Groups.”
“The matter is closed in the sense that the letter has been revoked by the Director General himself, and the issue is resolved,” said Ms. Papaellina.
“I don’t know if you noticed, but in this room we have the Representative of the Department of Antiquities, as well as the Director of the State Archives and the Director of the Department of Contemporary Culture,” she added, noting that we are here to fulfill the goal of our Deputy Ministry “to enhance the culture of our region to the best of our team’s ability, and yes, the matter is closed.”
Last Wednesday, the entire staff of the Deputy Ministry of Culture staged a one-hour spontaneous work stoppage from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in protest against the repeated—as PASYDY stated— attempts by the Director General to place the entire budget of the Deputy Ministry under his control, without any prior notification or consultation with either the affected Directors of the Deputy Ministry’s departments or the political Head, Klea Papaellina.
