One interesting detail from AEK’s first few days of preseason training is that Martin Georgiev has been used exclusively as a center back.
Reports prior to the team’s departure for the Netherlands indicated that the Bulgarian was intended to serve as a backup right back behind Lazar Rota, however, Marko Nikolić has so far used the 21-year-old star exclusively in the center of the defense, where he has performed very well. Instead, 19-year-old Spyros Christakopoulos has been used as the backup right back so far, and he, too, has made a good impression.
The coming days, as well as the first friendly matches, will reveal whether the Serbian coach intends to use Georgiev primarily as a center back, or—following Christos Alexiou’s return to training and given the club’s intention to sign a central, the Bulgarian international will return to the role of right back.
It should be noted that Georgiev played both of his appearances for AEK during his first season as a right back, and he also plays in that position for the Bulgarian national team.
