Nektarios Petevinos voiced complaints about the refereeing after the match against Apollon ended. In a post, the APOEL press officer focused particularly on the referee’s understanding of the game, character, and management skills—qualities he noted a referee must possess.
In fact, he cited a related statement by Perluigi Collina, emphasizing that knowledge of the rules alone is not enough if it is not accompanied by an understanding of the game and its human dimension. At the same time, he spoke of the inability of some to understand “the basics.”

As he specifically noted, APOEL will address the relevant authorities regarding today’s refereeing, placing particular emphasis on the conduct of the referee and the first assistant referee. At the same time, he sent the message that soccer needs referees who understand the sport itself and its players.
Here is his post in full:
“Refereeing is not the mechanical application of rules. If that were the case, machines would be blowing the whistle, not people. It requires character, an understanding of the game, and management skills. Especially when a referee makes mistakes—that’s when he needs to demonstrate character and understanding. A referee may know all the rules, but if he fails to understand the game and its human dimension, that knowledge alone is not enough.” So said Perluigi Collina.
Dedicated to those who fail to understand the basics.
APOEL will address the relevant authorities regarding today’s officiating, and specifically regarding the conduct of the referee and the first assistant referee. At the same time, it is sending a message. Soccer does not need referees who fail to understand the sport itself and its true protagonists. Those who can’t even understand what they’re hearing should stay home with their awards and leave the teams alone.”
