For Alexandros Tofalidis, 2026 was a competitive year he will remember for many reasons. The Cypriot fencer celebrated one of the most significant achievements of his career, making history for Cypriot fencing, while that same year he became a father for the first time.

Speaking about the highlights of this year’s competitive season, Tofalides placed particular emphasis on winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

“What I’m most proud of in 2026 is that I became a Commonwealth champion. It was my first major title competing for Cyprus, and I’m especially pleased to have become the first Commonwealth champion in the history of Cypriot fencing.”

The 2026 competition schedule was particularly demanding, with four major events taking place within a span of just two months. For Tofalidis, however, this year also presented a different kind of challenge, as his athletic commitments coincided with a significant change in his personal life.

“My daughter, Lara, was born in late April, and I’m proud that, despite my other commitments, I managed to continue my training and compete in the European Championships, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the Mediterranean Games—all within two months.”

With this year’s competitive schedule now complete, the Cypriot fencer has already begun planning his next steps. The coming period offers an opportunity for reflection, as he examines what worked effectively in his preparation and where there is room for improvement, as he looks ahead to his return to competition in 2027.

Attention is now turning to the next major competitions, with the quest for another Olympic qualification remaining at the center of his plans.

“Right now, my goal is the 2027 European Games, where I’ll be competing for the third time. After that, my preparation will focus on the pre-Olympic event in April 2028, with the goal of securing qualification for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.”

After a year full of significant moments, both in sports and in his personal life, Alexandros Tofalidis is now turning his attention to 2027, with his sights set on the ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Alexandros Tofalidis has the support of the Cyprus Sports Organization, Allwyn Cyprus, ISX Financial, and the International Olympic Committee’s “Olympic Solidarity” program.
