At the press conference ahead of Olympiacos’ match against Jagiellonia to kick off the Europa League group stage, Imanol Alguacil commented that he expects his players to be more effective with the chances they create.
He also spoke about his relationship and interactions with Valverde and Medilibar.
Here is what he said in detail at the press conference:
On Ese and the starting lineup: “I’ve pretty much decided on the starting lineup. There’s one more practice left—not to avoid talking about Santiago. What I need to do is work with the team. We need to try out some ideas to help the team. Regardless of what happened in the last game we lost, I’ll always do what’s best for the team.”
On whether there’s a secret formula: “I didn’t know that. We shouldn’t be thinking about the past or the Conference. What we want is to win tomorrow. The expectations of the fans, the team, and the players—as well as my own—are very high. It doesn’t help us to talk about the final; what matters is winning tomorrow.”
On Olympiacos, Valverde, and Medilibar: “I’m in constant contact with both Ernesto and Medilibar. I haven’t spoken with Medilibar since I signed because it didn’t seem right to me. Ernesto has told me how great it is to win here. My hope is that when I leave in a few years, I’ll have the same love and appreciation for them.”
On Jagiellonia: “I have a very good impression of Jagiellonia. They put pressure on us from the wings. I’m expecting a very aggressive opponent. We want to hold our own defensively. When we get our chances, we need to be more effective. We’re expecting a tough game, and we’ll have to be strong defensively and effective on offense.”
On his arrival, this period, and how he feels about taking over a team now that the season has already started: “The answer is very simple. I came to Olympiacos.”
