The first “eternal” rivalry of the season was painted red and white, with Olympiacos defeating Panathinaikos 1-0 at the “G. Karaiskakis” Stadium in the 6th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.
Panagiotis Retsos scored the game-winning goal in the 34th minute, with the Piraeus side holding onto their lead even after being reduced to ten men in the 66th minute, due to Saliaka’s ejection after receiving a second yellow card.
The significance of the victory was also reflected in the reactions after the final whistle. Imanol Alguacil appeared particularly pleased with his players’ effort and, after the press conference, did not hide his enthusiasm, shouting “Let’s go, Olympiacos!”
It was a spontaneous moment from the Spanish coach, following a result that ended Panathinaikos’s perfect run and gave the “Red-and-Whites” a significant boost in the standings.
Such spontaneity, however, is nothing new for Alguacil. One of the most memorable moments of his career came after winning the Spanish Cup with Real Sociedad, when, during the press conference, he briefly set aside his role as coach and turned into… a fan, chanting his team’s slogans.
