Former AEK coach Matías Almeida spoke about Orbelín Pineda and their upcoming reunion. The Argentine coach of Monterrey commented on the “Ragados’” signing of the 30-year-old midfielder, explaining the special relationship he has with him, as well as the qualities he brings as a player and as a person.
In detail:
“The deal with Orbelín hasn’t been finalized yet. He’s a player I really wanted. He’s the player I’ve coached the most throughout my entire coaching career. I think I’ve coached him in about 240 games, something like that. It’s a shame they didn’t take notice of him, because he was named the best player in a European championship for three consecutive years. That should fill them with pride. “A Mexican player who was named the best player three times in a row at a major tournament, where he also won the championship,” he said initially.
He then highlighted the recognition the player received in Greece and the personal qualities that make him a unique kind of soccer player: “In Greece, he received the love and recognition he deserves. AEK also gave Orbelín many good things. He is a player beloved by the fans and has a wonderful story as a Mexican in Greece. He’s dynamic, humble, plays in every game, wants to improve, is a good teammate, represents his country well, has started a family, is intelligent, and has many other positive qualities. That’s why I always try to take him with me wherever I go. I haven’t spoken to him yet, believe it or not. We’ve only exchanged one message.”
