Our National Team Departs for Montenegro – Alpha Cyprus Joins the Delegation (VIDEO)

Heading to Podgorica
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Cyprus national team is boarding a flight to Podgorica today (Sept. 23, 5:00 p.m.).

Our national team is traveling to Montenegro ahead of their away match against the Montenegrin national team, scheduled for this coming Friday (September 25, 9:45 p.m.) in the Nations League opener.

With the only absence being the injured Sielis, who was left off the roster, Cyprus is looking for a positive result to get this new campaign off to an ideal start, with Akis Mantzios having 27 players at his disposal.

The full roster is as follows: Andreas Paraskevas, Fabiano Freitas, Joel Mol, Neophytos Michael, Andreas Siikkis, Nicolas Tsaroulla, Evagoras Antoniou, Konstantinos Laifis, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Leonidas Konomis, Nikolas Panagiotou, Giorgos Malekkidis, Andreas Christou, Kostas Pileas, Kostakis Artymatas, Hector Kyprianou, Charalambos Kyriakou, Panagiotis Andreou, Ioannis Kostis, Grigoris Kastanos, Stavros Georgiou, Angelos Neophytou, Andronikos Kakoullis, Marcus Edwards, Loizos Loizou, Ioannis Pittas, and Marinos Tzionis.

Alpha Cyprus and AlphaNews.Live correspondent Giorgos Kyzas is traveling with the team and will be reporting on the atmosphere within our national team, as well as all the latest developments, both in the match against Montenegro and in the upcoming match against Latvia (September 28, 7:00 p.m.).

Before departure, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) press officer, Konstantinos Siamboullis, made a statement and spoke about our national team’s first away match.

Here are his remarks in detail:

“A special day. It’s a momentous start—our first campaign in the Nations League. It’s a competition in which we have high expectations and standards, and we hope to do well. We’re starting with what is theoretically our toughest opponent, Montenegro, on the road. Three more matches follow, but our focus is on Friday’s game—to get off to a good start—and then we’ll take it from there with the rest of our opponents. It’s an 11-day mini-tournament. We’ll need to manage the roster carefully; we’ll need to stay focused; everyone will be needed, and we hope to rise to the challenge. This is uncharted territory for all national teams, not just ours—especially since we’ve only had two full training sessions and are now being called upon to play these matches.

On Laifis: “If we said he’s 100% ready, we wouldn’t be telling the truth. However, we have two games. Tomorrow is the big day for the match against Montenegro. The odds aren’t in his favor. He has a better chance of playing in the match against Latvia, but we’ll be evaluating him on a day-to-day basis. We decided to have Sielis stay behind to continue his treatment and be reevaluated when we return.”
