The decisions made today by the Professional Sports Committee may cause upheaval in Greek basketball.

Specifically, as announced, it is revoking Prometheus’s participation certificate for the 2025–26 season, as well as the licenses it had granted to Athanasios Triantafyllidis, Charalambos Michalopoulos, and Angelos Zannis for the acquisition of their stake in the basketball club’s share capital.

Finally, it decided to impose a fine of 50,000 euros on Evangelos Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, finding him guilty “as a person associated and connected in any way with the basketball club,” as the decision specifically states.

We recall that months ago, Ilias Papatheodorou and the Amarousio Basketball Club had filed complaints with the Professional Sports Committee, in which they claimed that a relationship still exists between Promisand the president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), Vangelis Liolios. Today’s decisions by the EEA, by imposing these penalties, essentially validate these allegations.

The EEA’s announcement in detail:

1. Summons for a hearing of Promitheas Patras Basketball Club,
1) for the revocation of the certificate granted for the 2025–2026 season pursuant to Article 77A, paragraph 3, final clause, and 7, in conjunction with Article 69, paragraph 12 of Law 2725/1999, as currently in force,
2) to revoke the Commission’s decisions dated July 10, 2020, by which Athanasios Triantafyllidis, Charalambos Michalopoulos, and Angelos Zannis permission to acquire 30%, 30%, and 24.62%, respectively, of the share capital of the Basketball Club, pursuant to Article 69(1)(d) in conjunction with Articles 69A(3) and 77A(9) of Law 2725/1999, as currently in force,
3) for violation of Article 77A, paragraph 1, subparagraphs a, 9, and 10, in conjunction with Article 83, paragraphs 3 and 4, of Law 2725/1999, as currently in force, (failure to submit to the EEA a sworn statement and criminal record of Evangelos Liolios, despite the informal and tacit approval of the Administration in assigning to him to manage and represent the Basketball Club in matters related to its administration).

1.1.) ACTION TAKEN by majority vote. REVOKES the certificate granted for the 2025–2026 season.

1.2.) A RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED by a majority vote. REVOKES the Committee’s decisions dated July 10, 2020, by which Athanasios Triantafyllidis, Charalambos Michalopoulos, and Angelos Zannis permission to acquire 30%, 30%, and 24.62%, respectively, of the share capital of PROMETHEUS PATRAS Basketball Club.

1.3.) THE RESOLUTION WAS ADOPTED by a majority vote. A fine of 15,000 euros was IMPOSED by a majority vote.

2. Summons for a hearing issued to Evangelos Liolios for violation of Article 77A, paragraph 1, subparagraph a, 9, and 10, in conjunction with Article 83, paragraphs 3 and 4, of Law 2725/1999, as currently in force, (a person related to or associated in any way with the basketball club, with the management’s acquiescence, without complying with the provisions of the Sports Law). ACTION TAKEN by majority vote. IMPOSES a fine of 50,000 euros by majority vote.
