Tsitsipas, back in his old form, put on a display of power against Hugo Gaston and advanced with ease and style to the second round of Wimbledon, where he made history as the first Greek to reach nine appearances in the main draw of the British Grand Slam!
Just a few hours after the new—and final—“breakup” with his father, Apostolos, in his role as coach, the Greek tennis player not only showed no signs of being affected; on the contrary, he was explosive and, with beautiful tennis, prevailed 3-0 in sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) over the 25-year-old Frenchman (No. 118) after just 1 hour and 30 minutes of play!
The 27-year-old tennis player, currently ranked No. 87 in the world, came out of the gate with his foot on the… gas, winning three of his four service games to love! At the same time, he put immense pressure on his opponent when he was serving, ultimately securing two break points to take the set 6-1 and go up 1-0!
The second set began with a break of Gaston’s serve for Stefanos, a lead the Greek tennis player defended until the end, winning the set 6-4, as neither player was able to “break” his opponent’s serve.
With his confidence sky-high, the former world No. 3 completely dominated the court and scored some impressive points. As a result, he managed to win five consecutive games—three of his own and two by Gaston—to take a 5-1 lead, before going on to win the third set 6-2.
Now, Stefanos Tsitsipas is waiting to find out who his opponent will be in the next round of the British Grand Slam, who will most likely be the legendary Novak Djokovic, who faces China’s Yibing Wu (No. 99) later today.
