The statement by former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that the French national team relies on players who are not… French, sparked strong reactions ahead of tomorrow’s World Cup semifinal between the two countries.
The president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, offered his own response, citing a racist undertone in these remarks.
“Mariano Rajoy’s comments about the French team are unacceptable and have racist undertones. And they raise questions about the repugnant atmosphere created by such statements. Our players do not need certificates of citizenship from the former Spanish prime minister. “The French national team belongs to France,” Diallo wrote on social media ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal between France and Spain (10:00 p.m.).
