There’s never been a small final like this before! Although England started without Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham in the starting lineup, they led 4-0 at halftime in Miami, held off France’s incredible comeback attempt (France cut the lead to 4-3 in the 66th minute), and secured a historic victory with the “insane” 6-4, securing third place at the 2026 World Cup—their best World Cup finish since 1966!
Michael Olise, for his part, made history, as did Kylian Mbappé. The Real Madrid star became the World Cup’s top scorer with 22 goals, while the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder provided two assists for his teammate’s goals.
This brings his total number of assists to seven in this World Cup, breaking Pelé’s record of six assists from the. That was the previous record, with one caveat: Opta did not begin compiling data prior to 1966.
It is worth noting that Olise provided all seven of his assists to Mbappé. The Bayern winger’s exceptional form this summer is a continuation of the top-notch performances he delivered for his team during the 2025–26 season, as he scored 15 goals and recorded 19 assists in the Bundesliga alone, helping the Bavarians win the league title and the DFB Cup.
