Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is leaving the Gabon national team with some pointed remarks directed at everyone. The captain of the African country’s national team spoke in a television interview in his homeland and unleashed a barrage of criticism.
“They humiliated me and tarnished my reputation, even though I played in the Africa Cup of Nations while I was injured. That was the last straw, and I’d rather leave,” he emphasized.
His country’s all-time leading scorer was accused by his government of being responsible for the team’s elimination—with three losses—in the group stage of the tournament in Morocco.
The 37-year-old Aubameyang, who now plays for La Coruña, is retiring from the national team after 17 years, having scored 40 goals in 86 appearances.
