Argentina made history for all the wrong reasons in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, as it finished regulation time without a single shot on goal. This is an unprecedented occurrence, as no team in World Cup history had ever reached a final without threatening the opponent’s goal even once.
The 90 minutes did not produce a world champion, as the two teams were forced into extra time. Spain controlled the game, kept possession, applied pressure, and moved the ball around effectively, but couldn’t find the back of the net, as they also came up against the outstanding Emiliano Martínez! On the other hand, the “Albiceleste” remained passive, failed to create a single scoring chance, and set a record that will be remembered for years to come in the 2026 final.
Despite its offensive struggles, Argentina held firm defensively and will compete for the trophy in extra time, hoping to turn things around in the extra half-hour.
