AEK was the better team, controlled the game, and created chances, but failed to score. The 0-0 draw with Levski in Sofia leaves everything up in the air, but AEK’s performance in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs is what keeps optimism alive ahead of the big rematch (August 26, 10:00 p.m.)
Marko Nikolić’s team didn’t falter in the “electric” atmosphere at “Vasil Levski Stadium,” didn’t get carried away by the Bulgarians’ enthusiasm, and as time went on, they took more and more control of the game. They moved the ball around, pushed up their lines, linked up well, and created the chances that could have earned them a valuable away win.
The highlight was Jović’s shot off the crossbar in the 20th minute, though the Serbian had other chances to open the scoring as well. Levski posed little threat, and when called upon, Strakosa was there to keep the score at zero. Nikolić’s substitutions helped quite a bit, but the team’s lack of finishing cost Enosis dearly.
