Leon Bailey opened up in his first comments as an Olympiacos player, expressing his excitement about this new chapter in his career and his return to an environment he knows well.
The Jamaican international winger spoke highly of the club, the fans, and the family-like atmosphere he encountered in the locker room, while also mentioning the on-field contributions he hopes to make to the team.
Bailey set high goals early on, emphasizing that he wants to help Olympiacos not only win the league title, but also to have a great run in Europe, even going so far as to express his desire to win the Europa League.
At the same time, he highlighted the importance of family and Jamaica, which he considers his greatest sources of motivation.
Here’s what he said in detail:
First of all, thank you very much. It’s a great pleasure for me to be here; it’s a wonderful feeling to join a huge club like this one. I’ve seen how the club has evolved over the years; I’ve played here before, and it’s wonderful to be back.
I know what great fans the club has. The fans are very passionate about soccer, and that makes me happy. I know how much passion the fans bring to the game and to the club. So the atmosphere is wonderful, as are the locker rooms and all the facilities.
Olympiacos is definitely a great club. I’ve had the experience of competing in this atmosphere, and playing for Olympiacos this time around means a lot to me. I’m exactly where I want to be, and I hope we’ll make many memories together.
Olympiacos is an ambitious club—I’ve experienced it firsthand, I’ve seen it. I’ve seen the progress the club has made in recent years, and that motivates me to be here, on this journey with Olympiacos. I hope we’ll achieve great things, not only in the league but also in Europe. I discussed this project before coming here, and I hope we’ll win the Europa League title.
I think the most important thing for the team is for me to be in the final stages, to be an attacking player by using my strengths, my speed, to be active in different areas of the field trying to set up goals, and to be very effective in the final third. I think that can really give the team a boost in both difficult and good moments.
The most important thing for me is always to have my family by my side, because obviously, without family, we’re nothing. Family is very important to me. So when I came here, I knew my family would enjoy it too, and that played a role in my decision. So it had to do with family, and after talking with some of the team’s players, I saw that this club is a family. And that’s very important to me. I saw that today in many of the players, and I know that we can thrive through good relationships and hard work together.
Who has influenced me the most in my career? I’m a family man, and that’s what has influenced my career the most. I’ve been through tough times, and they’ve always supported me. But soccer—and obviously the locker room—influences me, which is why, as I said before, I rely on relationships. I like to be the one who encourages every player and fosters good relationships, because that helps a lot during games. This has also had a big impact on my career, because with good relationships, you thrive and move forward.
What motivates me is my family and my country, Jamaica, which I represent at the biggest tournaments. To me, that’s everything. My family is always by my side, watching me represent my country, holding its flag high, and (watching me) do so at the world’s biggest clubs.
My message to the fans is very simple: I’m obviously looking forward to meeting you, because I had a great experience the last time I played here. You can expect great soccer, lots of fun, and, of course, for me to help the team achieve the goal we’re aiming for this year and in the years to come.
