Nea Salamina defeated Anorthosis 3-0 at the “Ammochostos – Epistrfi” stadium in the 4th matchday of the Cyprus League by Stoiximan.
After the match, Ángel López appeared particularly pleased with the big win, especially given his team’s difficult start to the season.
For his part, Nestor El Maestro admitted that his players’ performance was poor, while also highlighting the missed opportunities in the first half.
Here are their comments in detail:
Ángel López (Nea Salamina): “We dedicate this victory to our fans, who stood by us once again. Whatever we didn’t give them in our first home game, we gave them now. They helped us a lot. I think the ball was unfair to us. We didn’t deserve to come away with just one point, but that’s how it turned out due to certain circumstances. We showed what we’re capable of. We could have taken the three points, and we did. We struggled during the game, but we rose to the challenge. Some people were saying we were the worst team. Even now that we’ve won, we’re not the best. None of that is true. We’re staying united and continuing our work. They were confident after their win against Anorthosis. We didn’t play well in the first half. We stayed united and capitalized on the opportunities we needed to. We worked on what was necessary. I’m happy for the players because we’ve been through some tough weeks. I believe that has now changed. We’ve brought in several players, and let’s not forget that we’re coming up from the Second Division. We need time, and we’ll continue the good work. I’m very optimistic because I know the hard work everyone is putting in.”
Nestor El Maestro (Anorthosis): “The first half went exactly as both teams had planned. Nea Salamina played with long balls; we controlled the game, but we couldn’t score. We should have been given the chance to take the lead on Kiko’s foul. In the second half, our performance was very poor; the 0-1 score changed the dynamics and affected us psychologically—willpower alone isn’t enough.”
