AEK’s historic qualification for the Champions League group stage brings not only prestige and anticipation for big games, but also massive revenue for the yellow-and-black club.
AEK has secured a minimum of 23.3 million euros. €18.62 million comes from the guaranteed participation bonus for the League Phase, and the remainder from a combination of Greece’s television contract, the five-year coefficient, and the ten-year coefficient for the teams.
The initial amount increased by 346,000 euros on Tuesday after LASK Linz advanced past Celtic, and AEK earned the same amount on Wednesday night, as Viking eliminated Dinamo Zagreb. An additional 935,000 euros will be added to the revenue if Celje advances past Slovan Bratislava.
It should be noted that the Champions League again offers significant bonuses this year for results and advancements. Each win in the group stage brings in 2.1 million euros and each draw 700,000 euros, while each position in the final standings progressively increases revenue by 275,000 euros. For example, the 36th-place team receives 275,000, the 35th-place team 550,000, and so on. There are also ranking bonuses for advancing, with teams ranked 1–8 receiving 2 million euros each, those ranked 9–16 receiving 1 million euros each, and those ranked 17–24 receiving the same amount. Advancing to the round of 16 yields 11 million euros, to the quarterfinals 12.5 million euros, to the semifinals 15 million euros, while reaching the final guarantees 18.5 million euros, with the winner receiving an additional 6.5 million euros.
