It’s a draw, and anything can happen! This time, the draw has pitted our national team against a unique and exotic opponent. Puerto Rico will travel to Cyprus to face our national team in the Group II playoffs of the Davis Cup.
The important thing for our team is that, once again, it will have home-court advantage. Cyprus will host Puerto Rico in a single-match tie, which will take place from February 5–7, 2026. The exact dates of the matches will be determined by the Cyprus Tennis Federation, as the host team, and Cyprus will also have the right to choose the surface on which the matches will be played.
This will be a historic matchup, as the two countries have never faced each other before in a Davis Cup match. For the first time, then, Cyprus and Puerto Rico will face off, with a spot in the next round of the competition at stake.
Cyprus was seeded in the draw and is ranked 63rd in the world, while Puerto Rico is ranked 74th, in a draw that included 26 teams and resulted in 13 matchups.
The Caribbean team arrives in Cyprus having climbed two spots in the world rankings following its appearance last June in Group III of the American Zone. In a five-team group, Puerto Rico secured one of the three automatic promotion spots, defeating Jamaica and Costa Rica, while suffering defeats against Venezuela and Barbados.
The draw pitted our national team against an opponent from the other side of the Atlantic, with a different competitive history and no previous matches between the two countries. The fact, however, that the match will take place in Cyprus gives our team a significant advantage, which it will seek to capitalize on on the field.
Our national team will also have the opportunity to choose the playing surface for the matches, a factor that is expected to play a key role in the team’s preparation and game plan.
So, the date has been set. From the Caribbean to Cyprus and from there to the stadium, where our national team will compete in front of the Cypriot crowd for a spot in the next round of the Davis Cup.
