Kylian Mbappé’s presence at Real Madrid’s press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match against Inter in the Champions League group stage provided an opportunity for questions beyond the big match. Many focused on the fact that the French forward has not yet won the Ballon d’Or. “When
you play for Real Madrid, people associate you with that award. Many people talk to me about the Ballon d’Or—it’s a positive thing, I made history this summer, but we’ll see. It’s a good year for that,” he said initially, expressing his belief that he can achieve it this year.
He himself, however, considers himself the world’s best soccer player. “I believe I am—I’ve always believed it—but it’s a very personal matter. Everyone has their own opinion. Some will agree, others won’t. It’s a matter of debate… not everyone has to think the way I do. This year might be a good one for winning the Ballon d’Or, but it’s voted on by journalists, and they’ll be the ones to decide,” he said.
When asked to comment on José Mourinho’s statement that he prefers a Kylian Mbappé with 40 goals in a season and titles over one with 60 goals but no trophies, he said: “I’d… sign him even with fewer goals. Even 30. I’m not going to say this is a discussion for people who don’t play soccer, but it’s absurd. If I score 40 goals and we’re competing for La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, etc., should I stop scoring because if I score too many, we won’t win? Of course I want to win titles, but it’s not a matter of choice. You have to do both: score goals and win titles.”
