The day after the loss to Sint-Truiden, Omonia is looking ahead, though it has every reason to feel that the result at Stayen Stadium does not do it justice. The 1-0 score leaves the door open for the rematch, but at the same time reminds the “Greens” that in soccer, chances must be converted into goals.
Henning Berg’s team was in control for most of the match and created the conditions to leave Belgium with a much better result. Omonia’s performance was generally positive, with the “Greens” showing determination, applying pressure, and finding openings in the opposing defense.
However, the match was ultimately decided by the final effort. The many chances created failed to find the back of the net, most notably Montnor’s big chance in the 56th minute. The inability to score ultimately proved decisive, as Omonia failed to capitalize on its dominance on the field.
And that’s when the familiar soccer curse struck. In the final play of the match, a moment of inattention on defense was enough to turn the tide. Merlen took advantage of the opening, sent the ball into the net, and gave Sint-Truiden a result that, based on the overall picture, doesn’t reflect what actually happened on the field.
Despite the disappointment, the 1-0 loss isn’t a deal-breaker for their qualification hopes. Omonia now has the second leg at GSP ahead of them this coming Thursday (8/27, 8:00 p.m.), where they’ll need to capitalize on their home-field advantage, display the same level of play, and, above all, be more effective in converting the chances they create.
There is now only one thing to do: lift their heads and fight back. The defeat in Belgium leaves a bitter taste because of the way it happened, but at the same time keeps their goal of advancing to the Europa League group stage alive. Omonia has 90 minutes ahead of them to overturn the score, turn the injustice of the first match into motivation, and secure qualification.
