Cypriot basketball is in deep mourning, as Dimitris Palalas passed away on Monday (September 28) at the age of 68.
Palalas was one of the most important figures in the history of AEL and Cypriot basketball, leaving his own unique mark while wearing the “Queen’s” jersey.
Wearing his signature No. 9 jersey, he played for AEL from 1972 to 1988 and was a member of the team that won the club’s first-ever championship in 1974.
His tenure with AEL was marked by an entire era of success, as he celebrated a total of eight league titles. The championships came in 1974, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, and 1988—a feat that remains a record to this day.
