Akis Kyriakou (or Aggy), known for the Cypriot flag he displayed at “Stamford Bridge,” Chelsea’s stadium in London, has passed away at the age of 72.
The deceased was originally from Aradippou but lived permanently in England. In recent months, he had returned from England to Cyprus due to health issues. His body will be transported back to the English capital, where he will be buried.
From Cyprus to “Stamford Bridge”
The “Cyprus Blues” flag holds a special place among the banners adorning the stands at Chelsea’s home stadium. The banner was associated with Akis Kyriakou and represented the presence of the Cypriot “Blues” at the team’s home stadium.
However, its presence was not limited to London. The “Cyprus Blues” were a group of Cypriot fans who followed the London team on its away trips as well. As early as 2013, there were documented reports of “Cyprus Blues” members accompanying the team on away European and international trips. Thus, the banner essentially became the symbol of this group: wherever the Cypriot Blues were, there was their own identity.
In this way, a banner that began as an expression of a group’s fan passion came to hold a special place at “Stamford Bridge.” Among the hundreds of banners carried by “Chelsea supporters,” the “Cyprus Blues” banner conveyed a very specific message: that behind Chelsea’s blue lies an entire Cypriot community that faithfully follows the team.
In fact, as it was reported, the flag has received official permission to remain permanently at the stadium and never be taken down, as a small tribute to the man who kept Cypriot pride alive at Chelsea’s home stadium for decades.
