Stefanos Tsitsipas was eliminated in the third round of the Winston-Salem Open tennis tournament early Thursday morning.
The 28-year-old Greek tennis player lost to American Alexander Kovacevic 2-0 in sets (3-6, 6-7) in the second round of the tournament and will now turn his attention to the US Open.
Kovacevic capitalized on Tsitsipas’s errors in the fourth game, took a 3-1 lead, and then had no trouble holding his serve to take the set 1-0.
In the second set, Tsitsipas threatened Kovacevic in his first two service games but failed to convert any of his three break points.
At 3-3, Tsitsipas took a 4-3 lead, fought back to tie it at 4-4 and 5-5, and saved two more break points from Kovacevic, sending the set to a tiebreak.
There, Kovacevic scored a mini-break, and Tsitsipas managed to win only one point afterward.
