Shakhtar Donetsk, AEK’s next opponent, earned a crucial point on the road against PSV Eindhoven, with the two teams playing to a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the Champions League group stage.
The Ukrainian team took the lead in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half. Mendoza picked up the ball on the left, drove into the box, and beat Kovar with a nice right-footed shot into the far corner to make it 0-1.
PSV Eindhoven responded at the start of the second half and equalized in the 48th minute. Dest was the one to find the back of the net, following an assist from Obispo, with the two home players combining to set up the equalizer.
From that point on, the game became particularly physical, with many hard challenges and a total of nine yellow cards. Six of those were shown to Shakhtar players, in a match that remained intense right up to the final whistle.
