Unai Emery emphasized that the Aston Villa players were more focused and wanted the Europa League more than those of Freiburg; he thanked European football and all the teams with which he has won trophies during his career; he believes that the “villagers” have developed as a team and deserved the trophy, set the tone for better things to come in the new season, and touched on the challenges of the Premier League.
In detail: “This year we played with great seriousness. We were extremely focused and, of course, the players showed their desire. I told them we need desire and that they have to show it on the field, and they did. It’s truly something fantastic. Europe has given us a lot, and to me personally, a lot as well. I am always very grateful to Europe. For every competition: the Conference League, the Champions League, the Europa League, but especially the Europa League. I am grateful to the clubs I’ve worked for, because they showed me the way. For the support I had in Spain with Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal, and here with Aston Villa, and, of course, the players.
We have clearly and dynamically evolved, and this trophy is our reward. My dream when I arrived was to play in Europe, to reach finals. Our experiences over the last three years have led us to this. Our fans have been waiting for this for a long time, and this success is dedicated to them. But we won’t stop here. Next year we’ll be competing in the Champions League, and that’s the challenge. Once again, the Premier League will be the toughest league in the world. Fighting for a spot in the top seven, the top five, or the top four is very difficult. But that is the next challenge for next season. By winning this title, we gain experience, and that experience is important for the players. Next season, we can compete for many different titles.”
