Daniel Theis expressed his frustration over the lack of communication with Tony Parker when Villeurbanne’s ambitious plans went… down the drain. The German center had reached an agreement with the French team, but he first learned from the media about the departure of an investor, which completely changed ASVEL’s budget situation and ultimately led to his and other players’ departure.
““First of all, it’s an honor to be invited by Tony Parker. His idea was a good one,” Thais told a German newspaper. “But we learned about the problems that arose along the way mainly through the media or from teammates who sent me the relevant articles. Unfortunately, there was no real communication.”

Tony Parker probably felt bad about it himself, since his name was inextricably linked to the project. He had explained to the players what he wanted to do and what ideas he had. Still, one would have expected a phone call. We had spoken over the summer. Many players, including myself, had been to his house to discuss various issues. So, finding out this way was, obviously, disappointing,” he added.
That’s how the former NBA player found himself looking for a team with a rather limited range of options. “It was already very late in the summer, at the end of July. So, of course, I had to see what options were still available. After all, I’m not exactly in the prime of my life anymore. However, Maccabi contacted me very quickly and offered me the role of starting center on a two-year contract. That’s what convinced me,” he noted.
