Manchester City is very close to completing one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history, as it has reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernández.
According to AS, the two English clubs are in the final stages of negotiations for the Argentine midfielder, with the base fee of the deal amounting to approximately 140 million euros. With the bonuses included in the deal, the total cost could reach as high as 160 million euros, which would make Enzo Fernández the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.
In terms of the base fee, his transfer ranks behind Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool for 150 million euros; however, the activation of the projected bonuses could push the final value of the deal to record levels.
The deal with the player is already considered finalized. The 25-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract, running through the summer of 2031, with an option to extend for one additional season. Meanwhile, he is expected to travel to Manchester to undergo the necessary medical exams and finalize his move to the “Etihad.”
Chelsea’s recent moves had already reinforced the sense that the Argentine’s departure was only a matter of time. Enzo Fernández had been left out of the squad for the League Cup match against Luton, and he was not included in the squad for the game against Brighton either, following a mutual decision by the player, the club, and the coaching staff.
For Enzo Maresca, signing Fernandes was one of the key objectives for Manchester City’s new project. The Italian coach had long wanted to work with him again, and the “Citizens’” management appears ready to make a massive financial investment to bring him one of the Premier League’s top midfielders.
Enzo Fernández is set to play a pivotal role in City’s new era, which must also fill the significant void left in midfield following Rodri’s departure for Barcelona. These are, however, players with different characteristics, as the Argentine can play in several midfield positions and is more inclined to participate in attacking buildup.
Last season, he had the most productive year of his career, recording 15 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances, despite Chelsea’s difficult season.
