Virgil van Dijk tried very hard to keep his cool and not let his tone change when dealing with a reporter who kept asking him about his state of mind, about how he felt being back on the Netherlands national team roster, and about the… curt answers he was giving.
“You seem like you don’t want to be here… You’re not as friendly and open as you usually are, and you’re giving one-word answers,” he told him, to which the soccer player initially replied: “We can’t have a conversation right now; this is a press conference. Tell me what you want to ask.”
“I want to ask if you have a problem with journalists,” the reporter said, to which VvD replied: “I don’t have a problem with most of them, but when nonsense is written and said, what am I supposed to do?”
“You could step forward and speak openly to the person you think is doing this,” the journalist pointed out, to which the soccer player continued: “I think I’m addressing someone like that, aren’t I?”
“Aren’t I talking to him right now?!”
