With a striking presence at the Opening Ceremony of the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026,” the large delegation from the Cyprus Olympic Committee—which is participating in the event with 145 male and female athletes competing in 24 sports—made a dynamic entrance at the packed “Erasmo Iacovone” Stadium in Taranto.

The Cypriot delegation’s entrance onto the field during the official parade of nations was met with thunderous applause from the fans and stood out for the size, enthusiasm, and dynamic presence of the athletes. In the VIP box were President George Chrysostomou and DEMA Secretary General/Treasurer Giotis Ioannidis.

The Cypriot delegation’s entrance onto the field as part of the official parade was one of the highlights of the event. The size of the delegation, the enthusiasm of the athletes, and their dynamic presence drew warm and prolonged applause from the fans in the stands.

The Cypriot flag was carried by the delegation’s two flag-bearers: the captain of the National Handball Team, Ioulios Argyrou, and the shooting champion, Konstantina Nikolaou, who had the honor of leading the Cypriot team in the official parade.

The Cypriot athletes made a particularly strong impression throughout the parade, responding warmly to the crowd’s welcome. Fans in the stands asked for the small Cypriot flags held by the athletes, who obliged and distributed them to the crowd.

The scene that unfolded was particularly striking, as the stands behind the area where the Mediterranean Games flag was raised filled with fans now holding Cypriot flags, creating a special moment and scene inside the stadium.

Cyprus and Greece Side by Side on the Field

Particularly noteworthy was the presence of the Cypriot and Greek delegations, who sat side by side on the field after the athletes’ parade concluded.

Greece, upholding its place of honor and tradition, was the first delegation to enter the stadium, with wrestling champion Maria Prevolaraki and swimming champion Apostolos Siskos serving as flag bearers.

In the VIP section, the President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, George Chrysostomou, watched the Opening Ceremony seated next to the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Isidoros Kouvelos.

The Cyprus Olympic Committee is participating in “Taranto 2026” with 234 members, including 145 male and female athletes competing in 24 sports, forming the largest Cypriot delegation in the history of the Mediterranean Games.

Presence of government and sports leaders

The Opening Ceremony was honored by the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, along with Italy’s political and sports leaders and representatives of the international sports community.

The Italian state leadership was joined in the VIP section by the leadership of the International Mediterranean Games Association (IMGA), including the Secretary General of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Giotis Ioannides, who was re-elected Treasurer of the IMA, reaffirming Cyprus’s presence in the institutional bodies of the International Mediterranean Games Association.

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, officially declared the 20th Mediterranean Games open.

From Ancient Greece to Modern-Day Taranto

The central theme of the Opening Ceremony’s artistic program was the transition from the ancient world to the future, with the history of Taranto serving as the main thread of the artistic narrative.

Particular emphasis was placed on the relationship between the modern city and Ancient Greece and Magna Graecia. According to historical tradition, ancient Taras was founded in 706 B.C. by Spartans and was Sparta’s only colony in Magna Graecia. The city developed into one of the most important centers of the ancient Greek world in Southern Italy.

Taranto’s Greek origins were a central theme of the ceremony, through references to ancient Greece, athletic tradition, and mythology. The city’s ancient history was presented as a living legacy, linked to Taranto’s contemporary identity and its role as a Mediterranean city.

The dolphin, associated with the city’s mythological founder, Taras, son of Poseidon, played a special role in the narrative. According to tradition, Taras arrived in the region riding a dolphin, an element that remains one of the city’s defining symbols to this day.

Through ancient Greek symbols, athletic tradition, the sea, and the Sacred Truce, the ceremony built a bridge between the past and the future. Ancient Greece and Magna Graecia served as the starting point for a narrative that culminated in the modern Mediterranean and the coexistence of its peoples through sports.

Water served as a central symbolic element, representing a common feature of Mediterranean civilizations. The sea was presented not as a border, but as a space for communication, encounter, and cultural exchange.

Puglia at the Heart of the Artistic Program

The artistic program also highlighted Puglia’s contemporary cultural identity, featuring prominent local artists.

The program featured Al Bano, Mietta, and Serena Brancale, as well as the Orchestra della Magna Grecia, while the younger generation also played a special role, with Simone Grande, winner of *The Voice Kids*, performing the Italian national anthem.

Thomas Signorelli oversaw the choreography, and a total of approximately 70 artists participated in the production.

The selection of artists and thematic elements gave the ceremony a strong local flavor, with the history, music, and culture of Puglia forming an integral part of the spectacle.

The Start of the Major Sporting Event

With the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026” officially began, in which 26 National Olympic Committees and more than 3,800 male and female athletes are participating.

The Games’ motto, “Embrace the Future,” was linked to the message of the Opening Ceremony: the history and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean form the foundation upon which the future is built.
