The incredible Miltiadis Tentoglou made us proud once again, “soaring” to 8.44 m in Birmingham and winning the gold medal at his fourth consecutive European Championship!
After this (yet another) great success, he put on another show by making comments on camera when he realized that… he’d left his gold medal somewhere!
Here’s what he said in detail:
“It’s a fantastic performance. I haven’t seen the jump yet, but I believe my jump was very, very good. It was really that difficult to jump here today. It was one of the toughest finals I’ve ever competed in. It was impossible to put up a good performance. You could see that from the other athletes too, because we were all trying to clear 8.40–8.50 meters.
Ehammer is a very strong athlete and he made it… You could have gone even further. I pushed myself really hard; I gave it my all for 8.40 m. Today I was poised to achieve a really great result if the wind had been favorable.
I saved my fifth attempt to rest up in case I needed to go for a sixth, but in the end they didn’t let me through.
Pomaski told me, “You’re a champ.”
They gave us the medal, but I just left it there—I messed up. Guys, I took it off and left it there. I’m going to tell them—sorry.”
