As expected, the EuroLeague shareholders’ meeting unanimously approved Besiktas’ entry into the competition for the 2026–27 season. The Turkish team is returning to the top-tier competition for the first time in 14 years (2012/13) and will take Monaco’s place.
Although there was initially a plan to run the season with 19 teams and have one bye per matchday, the decision was ultimately made to include the Turkish team—which was a EuroCup finalist—since Bourg did not wish to exercise its right as the defending champion.
At the same time, ECA shareholders are expected to approve the plan to expand the EuroLeague to 24 teams starting in the 2027–28 season. This will also bring about a change in the competition’s format, with teams divided into regions. Under this scenario, teams from the same region will likely play each other twice and face teams from the “opposing” region once.
