Last night will be remembered for many years to come by the Esposito family. Not only because of Italy’s victory in Turkey (1-4) in the Nations League, but also because two brothers, Pio and Sebastián, made history by breaking a 111-year-old record!
Specifically, they became the first brothers to start in a match for the “Squadra Azzurra” since 1915 (!), when brothers Aldo and Luigi Cevenini were starters in a match against Switzerland (9-4) and, in fact, both scored.
Yesterday, it was Pio Esposito who found the back of the net, scoring his team’s fourth goal in the 50th minute. The Inter striker and his brother, Sebastián, who plays for Sassuolo, are not the only internationals in the family; midfielder Salvatore, who plays for Sampdoria, also made one appearance for the national team in 2022.
The last time two brothers played together in a match for the Italian national team—though not as starters— was on November 15, 2000, when Pippo and Simone Inzaghi were on the field together for 11 minutes in a 1-0 friendly win over England.
