The Cyprus national team did what it had to do against Armenia, winning 2-0 at GSP Stadium and celebrating its first victory in the Nations League. Our national team showed two different sides, but in the end got what it wanted and took an important step forward in the competition.
Cyprus laid the groundwork for success in the first half. They were effective, capitalized on the visitors’ mistakes, and, thanks to goals by Konomi and Kakoullis, took a two-goal lead before halftime.
The second half, however, unfolded differently. Pilea’s ejection in the 51st minute shifted the balance and forced the national team to play with ten players for the remainder of the match.
Despite being a man down, Cyprus showed character, focus, and defensive discipline. Armenia was unable to capitalize on its advantage, and the score remained 2-0 until the end, with Cyprus celebrating a valuable three points.
With these three points, our national team moved up to 4 points and into 2nd place in the group, with Montenegro leading the group with 9 points. Attention now turns to Latvia, whom the national team will host on Monday (October 5, 7:00 p.m.) once again at GSP Stadium, with the sole goal of securing a second consecutive victory.
The national team players are already getting to work for the next match, with preparations beginning today at 6:00 p.m. with a training session at the GSP facilities. Sunday’s final training session will take place one hour earlier, preceded by a press conference with Akis Mantzios at 4:15 p.m.
