With plenty of excitement, lots of goals, and surprising results, the action kicked off for Matchday 3 of the Europa League!
Olympiacos’ next opponent, Rennes, following their victory over OFI, managed to come away with a 2-2 draw at Juventus’ home stadium—and could even have secured the three points for a win.
The home team took the lead as early as the 5th minute of the match with a goal by Çelik, but the French side responded immediately, equalizing with a goal by Tamari in the 15th minute. In fact, they took the lead in the 43rd minute on a penalty kick by Dia, before Voltemande stepped up to score from the penalty spot as well, tying the game at 2-2.
Marseille continues to worry its fans, as following its home loss to Olympiacos, it also lost 1-0 in Austria to Sturm Graz, remaining without any points. Diakité, the “golden” scorer for the winners, beat De Lange in the 13th minute of the match.
OFI’s opponent in the next round, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat in Belgium against Union Saint-Gilloise, conceding three goals in the second half, while Alkmaar (4-2 at Ararat), Ferencváros (4-0 against Torrense), and Nijmegen (4-2 at Dinamo Zagreb)
Finally, Sunderland failed to come away with three points from Poland and Lech Poznan’s home field, as they opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a goal by Tuterov, but the score was tied at 1-1 in the 70th minute by Bengtsson.
