Iván Barton of El Salvador will referee the big semifinal between France and Spain, FIFA announced.
The two European powerhouses will face off on Tuesday in Dallas, with a spot in the World Cup final at stake. This will be the 38th meeting between the two national teams, but this time the stakes are higher than ever.
The 35-year-old referee will be assisted by his compatriots David Moran and Antonio Poupiro. Sweden’s Glenn Nyborg has been appointed as the fourth official, while Mahbod Begi, also from Sweden, will serve as the reserve assistant referee.
Burton has already officiated three matches in this year’s tournament. In the group stage, he officiated the Turkey–Paraguay and Japan–Sweden matches, and in the Round of 16, he was the referee for the Switzerland–Colombia match.
With a total of six World Cup appearances, he is the Central American referee with the most appearances in the tournament’s history.
The international referee earned his FIFA badge in 2018 and has significant experience officiating at major tournaments. His resume includes the Gold Cup, the CONCACAF Nations League, the Tokyo Olympics, and the World Cup in Qatar.
He has also officiated matches in the CONCACAF Champions League and the Saudi Arabian league, further establishing his presence at the highest level of club soccer.
