Germany faces some challenges ahead of its Nations League match against Greece, as Jürgen Klopp awaits the results of medical tests for Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz.
Germany came away with a 1-1 draw in the big derby against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, in Klopp’s first game as head coach of the national team. The visitors took the lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by Felix Enmecha, but the Dutch managed to equalize in the 90’+2′ on a goal by Kodi Hackpo.
The result, however, wasn’t the only thing on the German coach’s mind after the match ended. Musiala felt muscle discomfort during the warm-up and was withdrawn from the starting lineup shortly before kickoff, while Havertz was forced to leave the field as early as the 30th minute, also due to a muscle injury.
Both players underwent MRI scans, with Klopp admitting that it is unlikely they will be available for Germany’s upcoming matches.
“Both will undergo MRI scans, and then we’ll have the diagnoses. They’ll most likely be out for us, but I hope they return to their clubs soon,” he said.
The former Liverpool coach added that he hopes it’s nothing serious, while Nick Voltemande and Jonathan Burkard are potential candidates to bolster the squad for the rest of the tournament.
Klopp also reflected on Germany’s performance in his first game as head coach, noting that with just two days of training, it wasn’t possible to change everything.
“It was a crazy game, and we only had two days of training. You need more than two days to develop a new style of play. We’ve just scratched the surface; we need to go deeper,” he emphasized, while commenting on the draw, he added: “I feel like we lost two points.”
The situation with Musiala and Havertz is of particular interest to the Greek national team as well, which on Sunday (Sept. 27, 9:45 p.m.) faces Germany in Augsburg in the second of its four matches during this marathon international break.
