A particularly interesting scenario is beginning to unfold in the Championship, with Steven Gerrard at the center of it all. The Liverpool legend is open to the possibility of taking over at Wrexham, provided the club’s management decides to part ways with Phil Parkinson.
The name of the 46-year-old legend of Liverpool and English soccer has come up at a time when the pressure on Parkinson has increased significantly. Wrexham sits in 17th place in the Championship with 11 points after ten matches, having recorded just two wins, five draws, and three losses.
The recent 2-1 home loss to West Brom, despite having taken an early lead, has further intensified the debate surrounding the manager’s future.
And all this despite the fact that just a few months earlier, the picture was completely different. Last season, Wrexham finished the league in seventh place with 71 points, missing the playoffs by just two points. In fact, it was the highest finish in the club’s history, following an impressive run in recent years that took them from the National League all the way to the Championship.
That’s why the situation with Parkinson is anything but simple. He has been on the Rexham bench since 2021, has an excellent relationship with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and is one of the key architects of the club’s meteoric rise.
The owners currently have no intention of making a coaching change, though the results of the upcoming matches are expected to play a significant role. Wrexham next faces Preston, followed by two away matches against Blackburn and Sheffield United.
A Chance for Gerrard’s Comeback
For Gerrard, on the other hand, a potential deal could mark a major restart of his coaching career. The former Liverpool captain has been out of coaching since January 30, 2025, when he parted ways by mutual consent with Al-Ettifaq after about 18 months in Saudi Arabia. At that time, he left the team in 12th place in the league, having secured five wins in the first 17 matches.
The highlight of his coaching career remains, of course, his time with Rangers. In the 2020–21, he led the Glasgow club to the league title with 102 points and without a single loss in 38 matches, putting an end to Celtic’s long-standing dominance.
His outstanding work in Scotland opened the door to the Premier League and Aston Villa in November 2021. His tenure there, however, was not as successful and came to an end in October 2022, before he moved on to the next chapter of his career in Saudi Arabia.
During his time away from coaching, Gerrard has made appearances as a commentator on TNT Sports, though he has made no secret of his intention to return to the sidelines at some point.
Wrexham could offer him an extremely interesting opportunity. It is a club that has significantly raised its competitive and commercial profile in recent years, is owned by ambitious owners, and has set its sights on eventually making the leap to the Premier League.
Gerrard, however, isn’t the only big name linked to the position. Also in the running is Scott Parker, who knows the Championship inside and out and has previously led Fulham, Bournemouth, and Burnley to promotion to the Premier League.
For now, Parkinson remains in charge and continues to enjoy the trust of the Wrexham management. However, if the team fails to turn things around quickly, Steven Gerrard’s name may very soon move from the realm of rumor to that of a real candidate.
