Switzerland’s coach, Murat Yakin, after being eliminated by Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinals (3-1).
“I’d like to congratulate my team on how we played in the quarterfinal against the world champions. After we tied the game, we had the momentum. I wanted to make substitutions and play offensively. But the red card threw my entire plan off track. It’s a rule that has nothing to do with soccer. We were punished for it today. I find it completely incomprehensible—that rule ruined our game. It hurts to be eliminated like this. As far as I’m concerned, there was no reason to give the Argentine player a yellow card. It was a harmless situation. There were situations earlier involving outstretched legs and elbows, and nothing happened then,” he emphasized.
“You can imagine how Emboló feels. Blaming him would be completely absurd. He’s devastated. It hurts him, and it hurts us. It’s painful to be punished like this because of a referee’s mistake. We put the world champions on the defensive, but in the end, we were eliminated,” he added.
