The Greek national team is expected to begin competition in the Nations League in a few days. The Greek national team, following its impressive run in the previous tournament, secured promotion to League A of the competition and will face European soccer powerhouses such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Serbia.
UEFA has published a feature on its website about Greece and its return to the elite, with Ivan Jovanović and Makis Gagatsis sharing their thoughts.
The UEFA feature and the statements by Jovanović and Gagatsis
Greece will compete in the top tier of the UEFA Nations League for the first time this year. Having been drawn alongside Germany, the Netherlands, and Serbia in Group A2, Ivan Jovanović’s team faces its toughest test yet—and sees it as a defining opportunity.
The Greeks’ remarkable run in the top tier of the UEFA Nations League culminated in a thrilling 3-0 away victory over Scotland in the playoffs, a result that was aptly highlighted by the outstanding performances of some of the country’s best up-and-coming talents.
With players such as Konstantinos Karetsas, Giannis Konstantelias, Konstantinos Tzolakis, and Christos Tzolis having secured transfers to some of Europe’s top leagues this summer, the positive atmosphere surrounding Greek soccer was not going to be dampened by a difficult draw featuring Germany, the Netherlands, and Serbia in Group A2.
Jovanović: “We’re very happy to have been included, for the first time in our history, in the draw for the top tier of the Nations League. We knew in advance that the draw would be tougher than in other instances and that we would face strong opponents. Our goal is definitely to remain in the top tier. We know that tough matches await us, but we’ll be ready and will give it our all to achieve our goal.”
Makis Gagatsis: “The draw for the upcoming UEFA Nations League was a historic moment for Greek soccer, as this is the first time we’ve been among the elite in the competition. “Our players will have the opportunity to test themselves in highly competitive conditions, and I hope they will achieve the goal their coach has already set: to retain the spot they earned in League A. The challenge is great, but we believe in our players’ abilities. We’ll be ready and will give it our all to achieve our goal.”
